In Rietveld Academie’s Fashion department, students are encouraged to develop a deeply personal, experimental and critical approach to – or sometimes departing from – fashion, aiming to challenge its material and immaterial culture and values, its narratives and traditions. As a result, the annual Fashion Show presents a diverse landscape of fashion related work, anticipating possible practices in or beyond the respective work field.
From forgotten crafts, to socially engaged topics such as multiple cultural identities and representation, from embodied research to refreshing ways of working together – this year once again reveals how students have been increasingly embracing hybridity in their work. No longer allowing themselves to be defined by the traditional frameworks of fashion, they explore new territories beyond the existing boundaries.
You are warmly invited to enter into their universes and to engage and participate in the conversations they hope to start. From here on, their work will be in the hands of those who get to perceive it, reflect on it and carry it further into the world and into real life. Where it matters.
